- This is the only episode that is directed by Michael Rhodes.
- This episode marks the first mention to the Romulans. Another mention will be made in the Season 1 episode "Heart of Glory" and the Romulans will appear in TNG for the first time in the Season 1 finale "The Neutral Zone".
- This is only one of two episodes where Geordi La Forge is in command, the other being the Season 1 episode "The Arsenal of Freedom".
- The matte painting of Angel 1 was used several times later in TNG episodes. It was used as Starbase 515 in the Season 2 episode "Samaritan Snare" and as Malcor III in the Season 4 episode "First Contact".
