Tension mounts the Enterprise crew as a pre-arranged marriage between Counselor Troi and a man she has never met is announced. Meanwhile, a plague ship threatens the crew and a planet in which they are meeting.

- Armin Shimerman's role as the Betazoid Gift Box marks his only non-Ferengi Star Trek appearance (except the DS9 episode "Far Beyond The Stars") and his first role on the show, because this episode was filmed before "The Last Outpost".
- Michael Dorn (Worf) and Wil Wheaton (Wesley Crusher) do not appear in this episode.
- This episode marks the first appearance of Lwaxana Troi.
- This episode is the only episode in which Mr Homn has spoke.
- This is the third and last time in which Counselor Troi calls Will Riker "Bill". He was previously called "Bill" in "Encounter at Farpoint" and "The Naked Now".
