While examining the mysterious deaths of the crew on board the USS Tsiolkovsky, the crew become infected by a disease similar to alcohol intoxication which disables them while in the midst of a collapsing star that could destroy the Enterprise.

- This episode was based on the Original Series episode "The Naked Time".
- Original Series actor George Takei described this episode as a total copy of one of the best Original Series episodes and that it was unoriginal. His words were "young children putting on their parents' clothes and trying to act like grown-ups".
- This episode marks the only appearance of Chief Engineer McDougal. After this episode, Lt. Commander Argyle, Lt. Logan and Lt. Commander Leland T. Lynch served as Chief Engineer. As said in the Season 1 episode "Where No One Has Gone Before", the Enterprise had several Chief Engineers before Geordi got the position of Chief Engineer in Season 2.
- Deanna Troi debuts her dark casual attire in this episode, which she wore during the rest of the first season.
