While on a life saving mission to some critically injured colonists, the crew is paid a surprise visit by Q, who's intention is to offer Riker a place in the Q Continuum.

>TRIVIA

  • This episode marks the final appearance of Q's grid, although it will be mentioned in the finale "All Good Things...".
  • As with "Encounter at Farpoint", this episode is mentioned in the Season 2 episode "Q Who" when Riker says to Q "the first time we met you, you put us on trial for the crimes of humanity. The next time we saw you, you asked me to join the Q Continuum".
  • This episode marks the first appearance of the Starfleet Admiral's uniform in Star Trek: The Next Generation, although it was worn by Q and this particular dress will never be seen again. An actual uniformed Admiral will not appear until the Season 1 episode "Too Short a Season", although Admiral McCoy did appear in "Encounter at Farpoint" as a retired Admiral.

Responding to an order from Starfleet to rendezvous with a Ferengi vessel, Picard discovers his former ship, the USS Stargazer, while a revengeful Ferengi Daimon is out to settle a deadly score with the Captain.

  • It is revealed in this episode that in the Star Trek universe, it is very uncommon for a human to have a headache and it is revealed that humans do not suffer from the common cold because the brain has been charted and doctors understand the nature of pain.
  • Frank Corsentino (Daimon Bok) did not reprise his role as Daimon Bok in the Season 7 episode "Bloodlines" and as a result, Lee Arenberg reprised the role. Furthermore, Corsentino has played three different Ferengi characters in Star Trek- the first being Daimon Bok in this episode, the second being Daimon Tog in the Season 3 episode "Menage a Troi", and the third being Gegis in the ST: Voyager episode "Inside Man".
  • The bridge used for the Stargazer is a redress of the Enterprise's battle bridge.
  • The special effect of the Enterprise towing the USS Stargazer with a tractor beam will be later reused in the Season 2 episode "Peak Performance".

  • Josh Clark (Joe Carey in ST: Voyager) plays an unnamed tactical officer in this episode. Given the time frames of TNG and VOY, it is possible that this unnamed officer is Carey, assuming a later transfer to Engineering division and departure from the Enterprise prior to 2371.
  • The Prime Directive is violated by Picard when he interferes with the Edo's punishment system. This is referenced by Lt. Commander Remmick in the Season 1 episode "Coming of Age".
