  • The saucer seperation effects is a reuse from "Encounter at Farpoint".
  • Director Les Landau makes his directing debut with this episode. Landau went on to direct other TNG episodes, as well as DS9 and ST: Voyager episodes.
  • The theme music used for the end credits of this episode was previously used as the Enterprise seperating music in "Encounter at Farpoint".
  • Footage of Jonathan Frakes (Riker) with Rice was later used in the finale "All Good Things..." so he would appear younger and beardless.
  • This episode marks the third appearance of one of the Enterprise's first season Chief Engineers. In this case, it's Lieutenant Logan.

While Wesley takes a Starfleet test for entrance into the Academy, an investigation is conducted on board the Enterprise by two officers from the Inspector General's Office who believe there is something wrong with the Enterprise.

  • While Remmick's conversation with Tasha Yar wasn't shown on scene, it was presumed to have happened because Picard said to Remmick that he had spoken to every member of the crew.
  • Remmick references the events of "The Naked Now" to Worf, "The Battle" to Counselor Troi, "Justice" to Captain Picard, and "Where No One Has Gone Before" to Geordi.
  • This episode is the only episode of TNG that is directed by Michael Vejar. Vejar later directed ST: Deep Space Nine, ST: Voyager & ST: Enterprise episodes.

  • This marks Jerry Hardin's first Star Trek appearance. He appeared later as Samuel Clemens in the Season 5 & 6 episodes "Time's Arrow Part I and II" as Dr. Neria in the ST: Voyager episode "Emanations".
  • The visual effect of the Enterprise being blasted away from Aldea will later be reused in the Season 2 episode "Q Who" and the Season 3 episode "Tin Man".

  • Armin Shimerman's role as the Betazoid Gift Box marks his only non-Ferengi Star Trek appearance (except the DS9 episode "Far Beyond The Stars") and his first role on the show, because this episode was filmed before "The Last Outpost".

  • This episode marks the first appearance of Lwaxana Troi.

While on a life saving mission to some critically injured colonists, the crew is paid a surprise visit by Q, who's intention is to offer Riker a place in the Q Continuum.

>TRIVIA

  • This episode marks the final appearance of Q's grid, although it will be mentioned in the finale "All Good Things...".
  • As with "Encounter at Farpoint", this episode is mentioned in the Season 2 episode "Q Who" when Riker says to Q "the first time we met you, you put us on trial for the crimes of humanity. The next time we saw you, you asked me to join the Q Continuum".
  • This episode marks the first appearance of the Starfleet Admiral's uniform in Star Trek: The Next Generation, although it was worn by Q and this particular dress will never be seen again. An actual uniformed Admiral will not appear until the Season 1 episode "Too Short a Season", although Admiral McCoy did appear in "Encounter at Farpoint" as a retired Admiral.
  • Marina Sirtis (Counselor Troi) does not appear in this episode. This is her first non-appearance
